Heart Walk 2011

Today I walked with my mom in the Rutherford Heart walk in my town. This is year number 3 for me to do this walk that benefits heart disease. It was a great day for a walk. It was sunny and comfortable outside. We had a great time! My mom always has a good time wherever she goes. I hope to be as fun-loving as she is when I get to be her age.

We were also interviewed by a local news station, but I'm kind of hoping it doesn't get aired. I was nervous. But at the same time, it was pretty cool! We talked about why we participate in this walk and who we are walking for. We walk for my grandmother since she had heart disease.

It was a busy weekend with walking/running activities. My next event is on Thanksgiving day and its a 4 mile run. I did it last year at 1:10. I'm glad to have some time to train and hopefully improve my running pace. My official time for the Komen 5k was 46:55, which is about 3 minutes faster than the previous one. Woot! As long as I'm improving, I am happy.

I hope you enjoy our pictures!

I'm walking in memory of my grandmother, Lola.

Adventures in Nashville

I decided to spend the day in Music City....a.k.a. Nashville. My kids are almost grown and have their own plans. I could write an entire post about those feelings....but I'll save that for another time.
Its been a fun day. I stopped at a local shoe store and got fitted for a new pair of running shoes. They felt so good I wore them out of the store. I'm looking forward to trying them out in the morning at Centennial Park. I also want to scope out the 5k course for the Women's Half Marathon here in Nashville.
I arrived in Nashville around 3 p.m. and had lunch at Qdoba Mexican Grill. My chicken queso burrito was yummy. But I'm not looking forward to logging those calories today. I'll have to do some walking to burn those calories.
I'm staying in a hotel near downtown. After relaxing a bit, I decided to get out and explore. I parked several blocks away from the action and did some walking. There is alot going on here today. There is a BBQ championship at Riverfront Park and the Tennessee Titans have a football game. I walked around for an hour or so, then headed back to the hotel to relax.
I'll give more details on my adventure tomorrow. Goodnight.

Fun Friday

I had a doctor's appointment this morning to re-check my cholesterol levels again. At the last visit, my doctor started me on Crestor, a medicine for high cholesterol, after trying to lower it through diet and exercise. It looks like things are going in the right direction, but the triglycerides were still high. On a happy note, I lost 4 lbs. Things are looking up!

After my appointment, I stopped at Starbucks for my morning java! I also decided to try one of their breakfast sandwiches since I was famished! That probably wasn't the healthiest option, but I countered that with a piece of fresh fruit when I got to work.

After working for several hours, I decided it was time for lunch. I didn't pack too much today since I was rushed with my doctors' appointment. But luckily I still had some salad fixins in the work fridge. I made a salad with romaine lettuce, cucumbers and some slices of ham. I also had a cup of brown rice to go with my salad.

I was able to find some time this afternoon to take a walk around our facility with one of my co-workers. We walked longer than we usually do - a total of 2 miles. It was a nice day to walk outside today and a pleasant break from the office.

After that workout, it was time for a snack. I love greek yogurt, especially when fruit is added.

Now, the weekend it about to begin! I am very happy about that. I'm looking forward to a special day tomorrow with my mom and my sister. Stay tuned for my special Mother's Day post in honor of my mother, Joann.

Starting the day off right

It's Saturday morning and I began the day with a 3 mile walk. I got up and made my coffee so it would be ready when I get back, made a protein shake for breakfast, filled my water bottle and headed out.

I found a walking trail at a local city park. I enjoyed it. I got there early enough so there weren't very many people and I beat the soccer crowd. This park is only a few miles away from my house, so I plan on visiting there often.

I came back home to enjoy my iced coffee while sitting on my deck. The weather was mild and the breeze was blowing. It felt really good since I had worked up a sweat from my walk/jog session.

Now I'm ready to enjoy the day! I'm planning on attending a church service later tonight then I'll be working on my side dishes for my family dinner tomorrow.

What do you have planned for today?

April 6 - National Start Walking Day

I posted a few days ago about today, April 6 being National Start Walking Day. I just wanted to report that I managed to get up from my desk and take a walk outside with one of my coworkers. I tried to recruit others in the office to join, but no one was interested. I'm glad I kept my commitment to walk and it made me feel good too. It was a gorgeous day with lots of sunshine. We walked right before lunch for about 30 minutes. It makes me feel good to stick to my goals. A feeling of accomplishment.

If you aren't familiar with Start! see the webpage below. This is sponsored by the American Heart Association, one of the causes I support.

National Start Walking Day- Join me!

Here's a great idea!

Did you know National Start Walking Day is coming up? My community has an event planned on Wednesday, April 6th. Maybe I'll try to attend this event. Even though it is scheduled during my work hours, I should be able to make it. Thank goodness for flexible work schedules! Maybe I'll see you there.

Happy Veterans Day!

I'd like to begin by honoring all the men and women serving or who have served our country in the armed forces. We should honor them not only on Veterans Day, but everyday. My husband, is one of them....so Thank you!

It's Thursday, and that means it's my Friday since I only work 4 days a week. I am very happy for that. I am eating a healthy lunch at my desk today since tomorrow, my husband is treating me to Mimi's Cafe where I'm sure to over-indulge.

For lunch I am having a lean turkey sandwich on Sara Lee white wheat bread with low fat mayo. I'm also having organic guacamole chips and a fruit cup with water/Crystal light strawberry lemonade. The chips are a little past their prime, so I will probably not finish them. I will also have one piece of Dove chocolate as a treat!

After eating my lunch, I plan on taking a short walk around my workplace. Its a beautiful day! I'm glad I brought my shoes with me today.
Have a great day!
